Epitaxial Transition from Gyroid to Cylinder in a Diblock Copolymer Melt
نویسندگان
چکیده
An epitaxial transition from a bicontinious double gyroid to a hexagonally packed cylinder structure induced by an external flow is simulated using real-space dynamical self-consistent field technique. In order to simulate the structural change correctly, we introduce a system size optimization technique by which emergence of artificial intermediate structures are suppressed. When a shear flow in [111] direction of the gyroid unit cell is imposed, a nucleation and growth of the cylinder domains is observed. We confirm that the generated cylindrical domains grow epitaxially to the original gyroid domains as gyroid d{220} → cylinder d{10}. In a steady state under the shear flow, the gyroid shows different reconnection processes depending on the direction of the velocity gradient of the shear flow. A kinetic pathway previously predicted using the self-consistent field theory where three fold junctions transform into five fold junctions as an intermediate state is not observed.

The MIT Faculty has made this article openly available. Please share how this access benefits you. Your story matters. Abstract The self-assembly of gyroid-forming diblock copolymers confined in cylindrical geometry is studied using a combination of computer simulations and experiments. The simulations, based on a system qualitatively representative of poly(styrene-b-isoprene), are performed wi...

The self-consistent field theory (SCFT) complemented with the Poisson-Boltzmann equation is employed to explore self-assembly of polyelectrolyte copolymers composed of charged blocks A and neutral blocks B. We have extended SCFT to dissociating triblock copolymers and demonstrated our approach on three characteristic examples: (1) diblock copolymer (AB) melt, (2) symmetric triblock copolymer (A...

Block copolymers not only are well suited for studying self-assembly and nanostructure formation in soft matter, but also provide a wide range of new applications in fields such as microelectronics, biomedicine, etc. Viewed as a simplified picture, a block copolymer is composed of two or more segments (blocks or sequences of monomers) that are chemically different and mutually incompatible, joi...
متن کاملA theoretical and simulation study of the self-assembly of a binary blend of diblock copolymers.
Pure diblock copolymer melts exhibit a narrow range of conditions at which bicontinuous and cocontinuous phases are stable; such conditions and the morphology of such phases can be tuned by the use of additives. In this work, we have studied a bidisperse system of diblock copolymers using theory and simulation. In particular, we elucidated how a short, lamellar-forming diblock copolymer modifie...
